Japanese knotweed, scientifically known as Fallopia japonica, is an invasive perennial plant that typically grows in temperate regions, especially in East Asia, Europe, and North America. It belongs to the Polygonaceae family and is known for its hollow stems and heart-shaped leaves. Traditionally, Japanese knotweed has been used in herbal remedies, particularly in TCM, where it is valued for its potential benefits related to inflammation and overall wellness, often prepared as teas or tinctures. The plant has a slightly tart flavor, resembling that of rhubarb, which makes it suitable for culinary uses, such as in jams and syrups. Historically, Japanese knotweed has been recognized for its high antioxidant content, particularly resveratrol, and was utilized in folk remedies as well as for its fibrous stalks in construction and crafts.*
