For many in the medical establishment, menopause is simply a physical process that a woman’s body goes that marks the end of her reproductive years. Estrogen levels drop as women reach menopause. Low estrogen can be responsible for symptoms like vaginal dryness, hot flashes, mood swings, and decreased bone density, to name a few. 

If the physiological changes of menopause aren’t enough, there is also a significant spiritual shift. Many women recognize this subtle spiritual shift as a desire for more meaning in their life. But this desire for deeper meaning is often wrapped in a cloud of uncertainty. Confusion arises around one’s path in life as one may begin to face new emotions.

In Ayurveda, Shatavari is known as the “Queen of herbs”, because it promotes love and devotion. The word Shatavari literally translates to “she who has hundreds of husbands” or “curer of one hundred diseases.” She is sweet in taste with cooling properties. This herb has been used in Ayurveda for centuries as a female reproductive tonic. It contains phyto-estrogens, the precursors of estrogen, and has made its use highest amongst menopausal women who suffer from low natural estrogen levels as a result of menopause. It’s adaptogenic properties help to lower cortisol levels, therefore work towards decreasing stress and anxiety levels. Shatavari also contains bioflavonoids, essential vitamin B components and essential elements of calcium and zinc. This herb acts as an antioxidant and balances the vaginal pH levels. Shatavari may reduce vaginal dryness, increase female vitality, help to alleviate body tissue depletion and nourishes the female reproductive system, which may also improve libido.

Leonurus cardiaca is derived from the Greek word meaning “lion-hearted.” Motherwort may help to reduce hot flashes, fainting, stressed nerves and sleep disorders. This herb contains weak estrogen-like actions. Her gentle grace provides us with much comfort and heart healing during these changes in our life, offering us loving support and nurturing. When we feel our hearts are closing into sadness or grief, motherwort wraps her loving arms around us to provide relief. Her nervine properties help to calm the nervous system in a great many ways, while holding space for us to feel what arises within and giving us strength and courage to heal.

Wild yam can be especially beneficial for women from preconception to postpartum and all the way through menopause. It is known for its ability to help with female hormones and hormone-related conditions, due to its estrogen-like effect on the body.

Black cohosh is perhaps the most extensively researched of all herbs used for managing menopausal symptoms including hot flashes anext night sweats. This magnificent herbs aids in spiritual protection and brings us courage to face obstacles before us. 

Dong quai translates to "state of return." For bone health, dong quai's been shown to stimulate proliferation of bone cells, while increasing collagen synthesis. Bone health is yet another common concern amongst perimenopausal women due to the role of estrogen in bone health. Dong quai is also another source of those important phtyoestrogens and lignans that help modulate estrogen balance.

Red clover contains phytoestrogens called isoflavones that may help symptoms due to estrogen loss. Trifolium may help ease hot flashes and night sweats, aid with sleep, and may help improve bone loss and inflammation of the joints. Energetically red clover blossom acts as a catalyst for self-actualization and deeper listening.

Sage leaf contains mild phytoestrogenic properties. It can be a great ally for hot flashes and night sweats. The botanical name Salvia is from the Latin for "to save or to heal," as in the word "salvation." Sage is high in vitamin K which is essential for bone health, it activates a protein called osteocalcin that transports calcium to your bones. Vitamin K can also help to reduce excessive blood loss during the beginning stages of menopause. Sage leaf also contains phytosterols, reported to have a cooling action in the body. 

Also cooling in nature, peppermint leaf can help being comfort during hot flashes and work as a digestive aid.
