Elecampane has actions that are expectorant, anti-tussive, sedative, anti-fungal, relaxing, warming, and anti-microbial. Elecampane can soothe bronchial tube linings, tracheal muscles and act as an expectorant for lung cleansing. For this reason, elecampane may be beneficial in supporting respiratory conditions which produces copious mucus discharge. During constricted breathing, the lining of the bronchial tubes become swollen and red, making it harder to breathe. Elecampane was used traditionally as a specific remedy for chronic bronchitis and bronchial asthma as the root contains helenalin, helenin, and the most effective ingredient inulin, a phytochemical that coats and soothes bronchial passages and acts an expectorant which helps to reduce and cleanse lungs of congestion.
Mullein is a wild and weedy plant ally with an affinity to the respiratory system. Some of it's uses are to help relax and soothe the lungs to help to alleviate dry cough and sore lungs, or to assist in calming asthma. It's mild relaxant & demulcent qualities help to soothe the lungs of inflammation and dryness. This is often caused by exposure to smoke or other irritants. Mullein can be helpful for dry, irritated and inflamed lungs and for coughs, as well as overall bronchial support. Mullein leaf has also long been used as an expectorant to help clear respiratory congestion, as it promotes the ejection of mucus from the lungs.
Echinacea root is known for its ability to help strengthen the body in times of weakness. Echinacea has been used for centuries to help fight symptoms of cold/flu and to stimulate immune system function. It helps to support the body in times of common cold, coughs, bronchitis, upper respiratory infections, and some inflammatory conditions.
Marshmallow Root helps to soothe the lungs with it's demulcent, antitussive properties. It can bring comfort from irritation of the throat, may reduce swelling in the lymph nodes, speed up healing time and reduce dry cough. Marshmallow is especially effective at beating a cold or the flu when combined with anti-inflammatory and antibacterial herbs. If you feel symptoms of respiratory infection coming on, Mallow Root can be used at the first sign of discomfort (such as swelling, burning and tenderness) to support the healing process. Marshmallow's powerful active ingredients help to break up mucus, reduce inflammation and kill bacteria naturally.
Calendula helps in soothing dry, irritated or damaged tissues while healing all our organ systems. She helps soothe a sore throat and supports the body during a cold or flu. The anti-microbial, anti-spasmodic, immune stimulating and overall healing properties of Calendula make it a wonderful ally to help with various infections throughout the respiratory system including general coughs and colds, whooping cough or pertussis, bronchitis, asthma, and or other inflammatory conditions of the lungs. Calendula can help protect and repair the respiratory tract against smoke damage. Calendula is an immune stimulant and modulator, bringing balance to the immune response. Calendula is also helpful to the lymphatic system in reducing swollen, congested and stagnant lymph glands.
Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb with anti-anxiety, antidepressant and anti-inflammatory properties (to name a few). It's known as the “strength of the stallion” as it has been used traditionally to strengthen the immune system. Like all adaptogenic herbs, ashwaganda helps the body maintain homeostasis, in moments of emotional or physical stress.
Schisandra Berry is by far the strangest flavored adaptogen containing the flavors of sweet, salty, bitter, pungent, and sour! Schisandra helps to enhance & protect healthy lung function as it is a great source of vitamin C/antioxidant rich. Schisandra is regarded as a lung tonic. The berries contain anti-inflammatory properties that support the lungs when inflammatory conditions of the respiratory tract are present, such as asthma. Schisandra's herbal actions include anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, expectorant, anti-tussive, immune tonic, nervine, sedative and strong vital stimulant properties. This Berry is well known in Chinese medicine as a respiratory restorative indicated for chronic coughing, wheezing, asthma, low respiratory capacity (shortness of breath), altitude sickness, and respiratory infection.
Ginger Root promotes your respiratory health by eliminating air pollutants, tobacco smoke and perfumes out of the air passages before they have time to irritate the lungs. It also aids to relieve congestion, and help improve circulation to the lungs, potentially reducing the severity of many chronic lung issues, such as bronchitis. With it's anti-inflammatory properties, Ginger can be helpful for issues such as Asthma, and other conditions where inflammation of the air passages are present in the lungs. Any potential for inflammation reduction can allow us to feel and breathe better.
